Radu Dumitrescu, one of the Editors-in-Chief of The New Federalist, has been shortlisted for the 2019 edition of the European Press Prize in the Opinion category. The shortlisted piece, entitled “Use Article 7 against my country”, was published on The New Federalist on 17 November 2018. The European Press Prize is awarded annually to “celebrate the highest achievements of European journalism”.

The contest received hundreds of pieces, from among which the European Press Prize foundation has shortlisted 23 in four categories. The other four articles on the shortlist in the Opinion category come from Madeleine Schwartz of The Guardian in the UK, Beata Balogova of SME in Slovakia, Vera Mulder of De Correspondent in the Netherlands, and Fintan O’Toole of The Irish Times.

Upon the release of the shortlist, the director of the prize foundation Thomas van Neerbos said: “This is one of my highlights every year – an opportunity to educate myself with quality news and learn from people from across the continent. Our shortlist represents the best journalism Europe has to offer.”

Alongside the Opinion category, prizes will be awarded in the Distinguished Reporting, Innovation and Investigative Reporting categories. The winners will be announced in Warsaw on 23 May. The prize jury includes Sylvie Kauffmann, former Editor-in-Chief of Le Monde and Sir Harold Evans, Editor-at-Large at Reuters. Each of the four prizes awarded is worth €10,000.

All 23 nominees for the awards are listed on the European Press Prize site.
