Union of European Federalists elects Sandro Gozi as new president

At its Congress in Vienna, the Union of European Federalists (UEF) has elected Sandro Gozi as its new President. Gozi, 50, was a member of the Italian Chamber of Deputies from 2006 to 2018, and served as the Europe minister between 2014 and 2018. Sandro Gozi replaces Elmar Brok, the German MEP who had held the UEF presidency since 2013.

The watershed European elections in 2019 are on top of the agenda for all pro-European movements, and the UEF is no exception. Speaking of UEF’s role in the elections in his manifesto, Sandro Gozi said that the movement has “an important role to play in uniting all democratic political forces to defend the European idea from the illiberal challenges and to provide ideas for European solutions and a European reform agenda.”

Christopher Glück, Pauline Gessant and Otto Schmuck were elected as the three Vice-Presidents.

At the Congress, the organisation also adopted a number of resolutions, covering topics such as a European unemployment insurance, ‘own resources’ for the EU budget, and a federal EU army.

The Congress also saw discussions on the UEF campaign in the 2019 European elections. The campaign, revolving around the theme of “choosing Europe”, will be run in synergy with the election campaign of the Young European Federalists (JEF-Europe).
